Charlotte, NC, resident Peter Zeller divides his time between serving with the United States Navy and handling global procurement as a director of strategic sourcing at Honeywell International. In addition to work, Peter Zeller of Charlotte, NC, loves military history and belongs to the Society for Military History (SMH), an organization focused on advancing and supporting the study of military history.
To this end, SMH hosts several events during the year, including its main event: the SMH Annual Conference. Cancelled in 2020, the SMH 2021 Annual Conference is scheduled from May 20 to 23, 2021, at the Hilton Main in Norfolk, Virginia. It is presented by the Joint Forces Staff College and National Defense University.
To make up for the lost 2020 event, the SMH 2021 event will be larger than past conferences. Up to 20 panels are slated for a simultaneous run at the event, and the Conference Task Force plans on maintaining social distancing requirements for all sit-down events and conference panels held during the three days.
The SMH 2021 Annual Conference also plans on expanding its operations beyond the Hilton Main to the nearby MacArthur Memorial and attached Slover Library. This expansion not only supports the conference’s larger size, but also it promotes social distancing.
Meanwhile, there are plenty of historical sites near Norfolk for attendees to explore. The city is home to the largest concentration of Navy vessels and near the Jamestown settlement and Colonial Williamsburg.
